I. A philosophy of the green Olympics Games based on carbon peaking and neutrality strategy, and energy transformation

(1) BAIC successively served 2008 Beijing Olympics and Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022

BAIC’s service team consisting of 212 hydrogen fueled buses, 330 EU7 electric vehicles and over 200 workers provided strong product, technique and service support for event-related mobility in Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. As early as 2008, BAIC-Foton served Beijing Olympics with fuel cell powered city buses. So, BAIC became the first large complete vehicle manufacturer in China's auto industry that serves both summer and winter Olympics in Beijing, the only city that hosted both the summer and winter Olympics in the world.

In December 2019, the Department of Transportation of Beijing Winter Olympics Organization Committee carried out expert assessment and type selection tests for the vehicles serving Beijing Winter Olympics, checking and testing the selected vehicles in range, temperature rise and climbing performances. Then, the selected enterprises conducted self-inspection of 100% vehicles in the whole process, strictly testing production consistency. In the mid-December 2021, the Department of Transportation once again launched start, driving range and temperature rise tests under low temperature targeted at vehicle use scenarios and driving routes. BAIC’s service vehicles underwent all the spot checks, with 100% checked vehicles outperforming all the test standards.

It's learnt that 330 EU7 vehicles would be operated in Beijing competition zones and T3 (working as cars hailed online) scenarios during Beijing Winter Olympics, mainly serving officials of the Winter Olympics Organization Committee and management members of country delegations; 212 hydrogen fueled buses would serve athletes and all the participants in the Winter Olympics in Beijing competition zones.

During the Winter Olympics test events in 2021, as a diamond partner of “Meeting in Beijing Winter Sports Events”, BAIC had provided vehicles and transport security services for four competition zones, including Chaoyang, Haidian, Yanqing of Beijing and Zhangjiakou, since the first event started on February 13, 2021. On a cumulative basis, it has organized services for 53 events, serving for 322 days and inputting 852 vehicles that included BAIC-Foton 9.5m and 12m-long hydrogen fueled buses, BAICORV BJ80, BJ40, Beijing EU7, X7 and Arcfox αT. On a specific term, 381 hydrogen fueled and pure electric vehicles were used, accounting for 44.7% of the total; 35,000 bus tours were completed, serving 282,000 passengers; over 1,600 members worked for the operation security team, offering transport services of more than 858,000 hours. All these efforts were highly recognized and praised by relevant departments of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, Beijing Winter Olympics Organization Committee and the organization committees of various competition zones.

Besides, as the shuttling means for event workers, each Arcfox αT vehicle saw a carbon emission reduction of 21.6 kg in every 100 km. If the daily shuttling distance is 50 km, 3.94 tons of carbon emission will be cut a year, equivalent to the quantity of carbon dioxide absorbed by nearly 800 50-year trees in a day.

(2) BAIC was honored the “carbon neutrality” certificate by Beijing Winter Olympics Organization Committee

As Beijing Winter Olympics Organization Committee put forward the goal of carbon neutrality, BAIC, joining hands with CEC (the carbon neutrality test and assessment service provider for Beijing Winter Olympics Organization Committee), conducted low-carbon assessment of BAIC’s services for Beijing Winter Olympics. While Beijing Winter Olympics Organization Committee announced the successful realization of carbon neutrality, BAIC was awarded the “carbon neutrality” certificate.

(3) BAIC is a pioneer in the carbon peaking and neutrality strategy and energy transformation of the auto industry.

BAIC is the first complete vehicle manufacturer in China that entered the new energy vehicle field. Embarking on new energy passenger vehicle manufacturing in 2007, it became the first enterprise that operates independently and was qualified for new energy vehicle production. To date, BAIC BJEV has launched dozens of pure electric passenger vehicles, including ARCFOX, EU, EX and EC, winning favor with 520,000 users. With the vehicle size the biggest at home and the No.3 in the world, it reported 18.3 billion of distance travelled and 1.94 million tons of saved energy and reduced emission, equivalent to the planting of 11.37 million trees.

In 2017, BAIC took the lead and set up the National New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Center, the first and only State-level new energy vehicle technology innovation center under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Centering on the green manufacturing system, BAIC has successfully completed the construction of 13 State-level green factories, the biggest number in China's auto industry. In 2019, BAICORV obtained the first pollutant discharge permit in China's complete vehicle manufacturing industry, setting a good example for industrial peers.

II. Issues on technology empowered Beijing Winter Olympics, several IPR technologies of homemade new energy vehicles

The 212 BAIC-Foton hydrogen fueled buses went beyond the currently applicable domestic standards, with 70MPa hydrogen fueled buses capable of starting under a low temperature of 25℃ and being kept and automatically protected in case of shutdown under a low temperature of 40℃. That secured the long-distance shuttling between Beijing and Zhangjiakou. Equipped with the efficient power cell enabled new-type heat management technology, shared battery enabled heat management and complete vehicle integrated heat management systems, Foton hydrogen fueled buses feature better battery start performance, reduced energy consumption and a weight reduction of 35 kg. Thanks to the world-leading dry film fuel cells and hydrogen-electricity-collision coupling technology, about 57.86 km of carbon dioxide emission can be reduced in every 100 km of driving. If each vehicle drives for about 400 km each day, the reduced carbon emission of each hydrogen fueled bus will be 231.44 km. The tail gas exhausted from each hydrogen fueled bus is water steam with zero carbon dioxide.

The adopted technology comes from the project of The Critical Technology for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Buses and Its Application. It once won the “First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Awards of China's Auto Industry”, and passed the first hydrogen fuel powered passenger vehicle impact test at home. There has been little research on the impact safety of hydrogen fuel powered passenger vehicles, with no relevant industrial standards either at home or abroad. As hydrogen fuel powered buses are an important bus type securing traveling in Beijing Winter Olympics, the project team conducted detailed research, and consulted global technical regulations and requirements in America and national standards about vehicle impact safety. On such a basis, it designed the real vehicle impact experiment plan for the simulated impact accidents of hydrogen fuel cell powered passenger vehicles, and developed the assessment methods targeted at structural impact safety and vehicle mounted hydrogen system leakage. After several rounds of expert assessment, the independently developed experiment plan was established. All the 212 AUV hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles completed 1,000 km dynamic road tests.

As the shuttling means for event workers, 330 EU7 electric vehicles are equipped with EMD3.0Pro intelligent electronic control, IBTC intelligent bionic temperature control system and the”3-in-1” battery management technology, with a steady range between 451 km and 550 km. Despite a large-scale cold wave expected during the Spring Festival, Beijing EU7 pure electric vehicles can steadily operate for more than 300 km under an outdoor temperature of -20℃ and an air-conditioned temperature of 20℃ onboard. The adopted technology comes from the project of “Critical Technology of the Motor, Power Battery and Electronic Control Platform for Electric Vehicles and Its Industrialization” launched by BAIC BJEV. It won the First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Awards of China's auto industry for “meeting internationally leading levels in overall technology, driving range per KWH of electricity, complete vehicle energy recycling rate, electricity driven NEDC working efficiency and other technical metrics.”

Besides, 5 EU7 electric vehicles with L4 autonomous driving capability will also be put into use to secure vehicle use in Beijing Winter Olympics in an all-round way.
